What is one of your favorite films from the 1920’s? METROPOLIS (1927). D: Fritz Lang There are films that are almost so incredible they sort of defy words. On its own ‘Metropolis’ is a wonderful science fiction film with imagery that is stunning and powerful even 86 years later. When you take into account when the film was made, especially compared to other films during the same period, and the incredible scope of the film plus putting the time in which the film was made into consideration from a filmmaking standpoint, it is almost hard not to watch the film with your eyes wide and your mouth open. The complexity of the film is rich and its set pieces and iconic images have been burned into our brains before having seen it because they have become a part of film history having been used (or offshoots and homages of them) […]
30 Day Movie Challenge – Day Twenty-One – What is a movie that reminds you of a certain event? STAND BY ME There are a few films that remind me of different things but I went with a film that reminds me not so much of a specific event but a time in my life. The summer when I was 11 turning 12 was one I will always remember. I was surrounded by friends and I had so much fun. I felt like I knew who I was and where I belonged. I was living in Connecticut at the time but then moved to Chicago and was taken away from all of that. I didn’t know anyone and felt alone and then didn’t know who I was. Eventually I made friends and rediscovered myself. Not that I never knew who I was but I was taken away from what I […]
30 Day Movie Challenge Day One – What is the best movie you saw in the last year? RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Not sure it was the best movie I saw in the last year but it was definitely the one that surprised me the most. I originally dismissed this film early on as a lame cash in. I didn’t see a point to it. The trailers made it look intriguing but not enough for me to initially give it a fair shot. Then I started hearing friends tell me how good it was. I decided to go see it and I was completely blown away. A movie disguised as popcorn entertainment but it actually contains very dramatic elements that take it to another level. Just an amazing film and one that is definitely one of the best films I’ve seen in the last year.
Day Eight – What is your favorite foreign horror movie? Låt den rätte komma in – LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (2008) d: Tomas Alfredson I don’t know if it’s my all time favorite but definitely one of the best foreign films I’ve seen in the last ten years is ‘Let The Right One In’. A brilliant film about a young boy who befriends a girl that turns out to be a vampire. The film is touching in many ways even as it deals in the horrific details. I remember watching this for the first time and being completely enthralled and amazed in the film itself. One of those that the moment it ends you know you just watched an incredible film. It is acted so perfectly, especially by the two child leads, and is shot so beautifully. The desire for us to fit in, to experience love, and to […]
I am officially one week away from starting production on my second feature ‘Dark Light’. An action thriller. It has taken over a year to get to this point and I am really excited and nervous. I originally wanted to make a much simpler film than my first film ‘Distortion’. However, I wanted to do something in a different genre. ‘Distortion’ is a horror film. ‘Dark Light’ is an action film. My two favorite genre’s as a filmmaker. I love all kinds of movies but the two that I say I’d want to make as a director would be ones within those genres. I wouldn’t mind getting pigeonholed there. Very quickly this film turned into a much bigger film than I had originally anticipated. As much as at times I do regret that I am also fueled by the challenge. Filmmaking is not easy. And if it is then you’re […]
