Hard to believe it but we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s JAWS. A film that not only terrified and thrilled me but fascinated and inspired me as well. I saw it for the first time when I was a kid on VHS. Even as a kid there was something about the film that drew you into it. I don’t mean just the naked girl who gets killed in the very beginning either. The build into the story and the sense of how much this shark tears apart this community and the leading up to the, in some ways, modern Moby Dick sea hunt. JAWS shows the master work of a young director who showed that he was a talent to go in line with the greats before him. A lot has been written about the way the film works because how rarely we see the shark since […]
Today marks the 38th anniversary of the release of one of my favorite films, Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jaws’. My love of ‘Jaws’ is huge. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I have watched it in my life and it is just as incredible each time. It has entertained and thrilled me time and time again and has inspired me creatively on some level in almost everything I have ever done. The film that almost died a horrible death from setbacks, over budget, a non-working mechanical shark, was saved by a young Spielberg doing all he could to make sure his film continued. I can’t even look at a water filled horizon without, at least for a moment, imagine a fin breaking the stillness. A classic in every meaning of the word.
I’m sure everyone knows by now that ‘Jaws‘ is being restored and finally getting released on Blu-ray on August 14th. One of my favorite films and one I have been waiting to come out on Blu-ray for a long time. The restoration they’re doing looks to be very intensive (video below) and I am really happy Steven Spielberg is as involved in it as he is. I can’t wait to finally have this on Blu-ray. Here is the Blu-ray trailer. Here is a really great video on the restoration.
I just read over at Blu-ray.com that one of my all time favorite movies ‘Jaws‘ is finally coming to Blu-ray on (tentatively) August 14th of next year. While I think coming out closer to the 4th of July is more fitting I am just happy it is finally coming out. And I think this goes well with my last post on Steven Spielberg. Now here’s hoping to get ‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark‘ on Blu-ray next year too …
