Some friends and I decided to make a trip to Pittsburgh and go check out some locations used in various George A. Romero (one of my idols) films. The main one being the Monroeville Mall where ‘Dawn Of The Dead‘ was made. A lot of these locations are changing so I wanted to see them before most of the recognizable things were gone. Going from Chicago to Pittsburgh is a good 8 hours so the drive was long but once we got there it was hard to hold in the excitement. We stayed at a hotel about 15 minutes from the mall. My room for the weekend. Saturday was mainly the mall. So most of the day was spent at the Monroeville Mall. I tried finding screenshots to try and match up as best I could some of the places. We parked by Macy’s. And under the famous number 30 […]
This month seems to be all about my top three favorite films. It started with May 4th which has become national Star Wars Day (May The Fourth Be With You). In the middle of the month I saw for the first time a really amazing documentary on TV on the making of ‘The Godfather’. The month ends with my friends and I taking a trip to Pittsburgh to visit the Monroeville Mall. Also known to fans all over as the ‘Dawn Of The Dead’ mall. Granted it may just be a regular mall to most people (and it is) but to horror fans over the world it was the setting to arguably one of the greatest horror films (and in my opinion greatest films in general) ever made. I will be in half professional mode as I am packing up my photography gear so I can photograph the mall and […]
In honor of the recently released remake of ‘Evil Dead‘, which I really liked, here is the original 8mm short film that Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert made which gave them the inspiration, plus used to help raise funds for, the original ‘The Evil Dead‘. The quality is really bad, I think it came off a VHS which was a dub of another VHS and possibly even a dub of another VHS, but it’s still fun to watch.
DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978) d: George A. Romero One of my top three favorite films.
Day Twenty-Three – What is a great quote from a horror movie? “Groovy.” – Ash from EVIL DEAD II & ARMY OF DARKNESS How do you pick one line from a horror movie? There are so many to choose from. I’d even lean towards “When there is no more room in hell the dead will walk the Earth” from ‘Dawn Of The Dead’. Also, in keeping with the rules, I am trying not to repeat movies here (though I treaded lightly in having the ‘Friday The 13th’ series listed as well as one of the movies in two different posts). I had to go with one I use a lot and when I do use it the only thing in my head is the way it was used in ‘Evil Dead II’ and ‘Army Of Darkness’. Everytime I say “groovy” all I think about is Ash (Bruce Campbell) saying it. […]
Day Nineteen – What is the best use of gore in a horror movie? DAY OF THE DEAD (1985) d: George A. Romero How to determine the best use of gore? There are a ton of movies to choose from. However one of the first ones that came to mind was George Romero’s ‘Day Of The Dead’. His zombie films always feature gore as the zombies munch away but it always has a purpose. Even if it’s just to show how relentless the zombies are. And also a payoff for fans during the last moments of his films as we see the zombies do their thing. However, ‘Day Of The Dead’ features, even to this day, the best zombie makeup ever. The use of gore is still unmatched. There are gorier films but for me the best gore is from this film. It represents special effects artist Tom Savini’s work […]
Day Thirteen – What is your favorite zombie film? DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978) d: George A. Romero Part of doing this list is a balancing act. You’re not supposed to have the same film twice for any answer so I had to really figure some of these answers out. Not to give anything away but a question later is what is (or one of) your favorite horror films and mine is in fact ‘Dawn Of The Dead’. But I also didn’t like that my pick for that one (which is my second favorite horror film) wasn’t showing up for any of the other questions so I broke it up. So consider this not just my favorite zombie film but also my favorite horror film. And indeed one of my top three favorite films of all time. In a world filling with a zombie invasion four people decide to take […]
