Star Wars: Why It Is Personal

Posted on

I’ve often written of my love of Star Wars. If you’ve known me for longer than 5 minutes then you know this about me. The original 1977 film changed my life. Star Wars is a very personal thing for me but I know no one really knows fully why so I figured it was time I said. When I was 3 going on 4 I saw Star Wars in the theatre and it was the first time I became fully aware of the moving image. I immediately became invested in what was happening on the screen. The profound images of a galaxy far, far away with characters and visuals unlike anything I could imagine. In those moments I fell in love with movies and with visual storytelling. Everything was different for me. I became much more interested when I watched other movies or even TV shows on television. The way […]

30 Day Horror Movie Challenge Part 2 – Day 5 – What is your favorite vampire film? FRIGHT NIGHT (1985) d: Tom Holland No doubt one of the most popular sub genre’s of horror is the vampire film. Stretching back to one of the most famous silent films F. W. Murnau’s ‘Nosferatu‘ in 1922 up until present day, which includes even the remake of this film, there have been countless vampire films of all different kinds. My personal favorite though has always been Tom Holland’s ‘Fright Night’. I first saw it on video when I was a kid and fell in love with it immediately. Sort of an Alfred Hitchcock version of a vampire film with a ‘Rear Window‘ homage with Charlie (William Ragsdale) looking out his window to his new neighbor, Jerry Dandridge (Chris Sarandon), where he sees a girl about to be fanged by him. No one believes […]

Day Seven -What is a horror movie you think no one has seen? MARTIN (1976) d: George A. Romero I know what you might be thinking. A lot of people know about ‘Martin’. Well, yes and no. Die hard George Romero fans (as I am big time!) know it but I am actually surprised how many people have not seen it. Many horror fans know of it but haven’t seen it. ‘Martin’ tells the story of a young guy named Martin (played so quietly perfect by John Amplas) who moves in with his older cousin. He gets passed around from family member to family member to be taken care of because Martin has a problem. His problem is he needs blood. He is a vampire but not in the fangs and supernatural way. Instead a guy that has this need for human blood. But it does mean he needs to […]

Day Six – What is your favorite vampire movie? FRIGHT NIGHT (1985) d: Tom Holland I absolutely love ‘Fright Night’. It has a good sense of humor but never in a way that overpowers the horror. When a high school student Charlie (Williams Ragsdale) discovers his new neighbor Jerry Dandridge (Chris Sarandon) is a vampire he quickly finds he is alone since no one believes him including his girlfriend Amy (Amanda Bearse) and best friend Evil Ed (Stephen Geoffreys). Desperate he even seeks out the help of a TV host, the fearless vampire killer Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowell). Now if you’re wondering why this one over so many other great vampire films (and there are many) the answer is simple. The question is which is your favorite not which you think is the best one. If there is a vampire film I have watched the most and love to watch […]
