Tomorrow I begin production on my second feature film ‘Dark Light’. It has taken me over a year to get to this point and I’m almost lost in a sea of different feelings. It’s hard to grasp the fact that I’m actually starting it. There were times where I thought it wasn’t going to happen. When you’re a one man team it is all too easy for it to fall apart. But at the same time I pushed onward to get it started. I don’t know how this film will turn out. I know what I wrote. I know what my intentions are. But I also know that what you set out to make is not what you will end up with in the end. I just want to make a film that is entertaining. I hope it is much more than that but at the end of the day […]
I am officially one week away from starting production on my second feature ‘Dark Light’. An action thriller. It has taken over a year to get to this point and I am really excited and nervous. I originally wanted to make a much simpler film than my first film ‘Distortion’. However, I wanted to do something in a different genre. ‘Distortion’ is a horror film. ‘Dark Light’ is an action film. My two favorite genre’s as a filmmaker. I love all kinds of movies but the two that I say I’d want to make as a director would be ones within those genres. I wouldn’t mind getting pigeonholed there. Very quickly this film turned into a much bigger film than I had originally anticipated. As much as at times I do regret that I am also fueled by the challenge. Filmmaking is not easy. And if it is then you’re […]
On almost all of the shoots I’m on the only behind the scenes pictures taken are usually the ones I take myself. Even actors that take pictures of stuff on other sets never do on mine. I must be doing something wrong there. Anyway, so I have almost no pictures of me on shoots which kind of stinks. While working on a secret project (which will be announced in the future) one of the guys actually took some pictures of me working. Hopefully the beginning of many.
One thing that is my advantage on shoots, both work and film, is to be portable. Part of my “thing” is that I’m basically a one man crew. For the most part doing interviews and B-Roll rarely requires a lot of people. In fact, I have almost never been in a situation where having several people around was necessary. Now if I was doing a commercial or something along those lines then that would be different. But in most cases there is mainly two of us on these shoots and that is plenty. I made the decision a long time ago to own my own gear. With that comes a big cost. Not just in purchasing the equipment but in upkeep as well. The part that a lot of people don’t think about. Most of the time it’s minor things like extra bulbs and gaffer’s tape. But other times it […]
Apple has finally released their new and revamped version of Final Cut Pro. As a long time user of it (going back to version 1.o) I have been looking forward to this for some time. Now the main issue with this version is that it was built from the bottom up. This is not an upgrade to previous versions. It’s an all new version. They talked to a lot of professional editors to know what they wanted in an editing program. Let’s hope it worked. As with most things Apple it’s wise not to jump in from the get go. It’s best to wait a bit. See what others think. With their new gadgets always wait for version 2. With software wait until there is an update. In this case I’d wait for version X.1. Which will probably be out in a few months. I must say though after checking […]
