I Am Talkin’ To You

For the third time in a year I had the awesome pleasure of seeing one of my all time favorite films on the big screen, Martin Scorsese’s ‘Taxi Driver’. I have seen the film many times but for its 20th anniversary I got the chance to see it on the big screen for the first time. That was also the first time I ever went to The Music Box Theatre which is my favorite theatre. That was back in 1996. In 2010 the Gene Siskel Theatre had a special showing of it. This showing happen to be on August 17, my birthday. What better way to spend my birthday? It was an old print full of scratches and tears and it was faded but it was amazing. I hadn’t seen the film in a few years and it was almost like watching it again. Completely exhilarating. Reminding me why this […]

Dark Light

One week …

Posted on

I am officially one week away from starting production on my second feature ‘Dark Light’. An action thriller. It has taken over a year to get to this point and I am really excited and nervous. I originally wanted to make a much simpler film than my first film ‘Distortion’. However, I wanted to do something in a different genre. ‘Distortion’ is a horror film. ‘Dark Light’ is an action film. My two favorite genre’s as a filmmaker. I love all kinds of movies but the two that I say I’d want to make as a director would be ones within those genres. I wouldn’t mind getting pigeonholed there. Very quickly this film turned into a much bigger film than I had originally anticipated. As much as at times I do regret that I am also fueled by the challenge. Filmmaking is not easy. And if it is then you’re […]

Dark Clouds

Finally got to do some more tests with my Panasonic GH2 camera today. This time video. I shot in 1080 24p to see how well the video does with this camera. While I’m not a huge fan of shooting video with DSLR cameras (mainly because they’re built for stills not video and the video is heavily compressed) I do like the look of it. For actual projects I’ll still prefer to use my actual video camera but for small stuff I am happy with what the camera can do. It was dark and gloomy and cloudy today. While not the pretty nature footage that I still want to get to show off the color on the camera this goes in the opposite direction. None of this is color graded. Right out of camera. All I did was edit it together and add the matte bars. And it wouldn’t be one […]

Fountain Montage

Posted on

I needed to get about 10 seconds of footage for a video for work. This doesn’t mean you shoot ten seconds. It means there will be ten seconds used so you have to shoot a lot more. Especially if you’re not sure what will be used. This was a location we hadn’t seen so I decided to just shoot a ton of stuff to give the editor options. I was originally going to be there for about 15 minutes but was having so much fun I ended up being there almost an hour just shooting this fountain. Once the ten seconds was picked for the video I then decided for fun just to edit a bunch of the rest of the footage together. So behold, a montage of this fountain in a little piece I like to call … “Fountain Montage”.

Pictures Of Me Working? OMG

Posted on

On almost all of the shoots I’m on the only behind the scenes pictures taken are usually the ones I take myself. Even actors that take pictures of stuff on other sets never do on mine. I must be doing something wrong there. Anyway, so I have almost no pictures of me on shoots which kind of stinks. While working on a secret project (which will be announced in the future) one of the guys actually took some pictures of me working. Hopefully the beginning of many.

Lytro – No More Camera Focus?

Posted on

Philip Bloom wrote a piece at his amazing blog (link here)on this new camera system from Lytro. It records not some but all of the light that is there creating a full focus image which then allows you to choose after the fact what you want to be in focus. Plus the file it creates can be sent to other people and they can change it. Amazing! Here are some examples. Go ahead and click at different parts of the images to change the focus. For more info go to Philip Bloom’s blog or the Lytro website. Both links above.
