12 Films That Have Stayed With Me

Posted on

On Facebook we tend to get tagged in different things. Luckily I have my settings set to not automatically post something if I’m tagged in it. It saves me the trouble of having to clear out my own page’s wall of free Oakley sunglasses, earn thousands of dollars shopping, or the never ending crowdfunding posts from actors and filmmakers I don’t even know. On occasion some cool posts from friends come along as in this case. My friend Bob got tagged in a post to list the “12 films that stayed with you” which he in turn tagged me to do one as well. Any film list is always a joy and a hardship. Hardship because I tend to put way too much thought into it. One of the rules is not to put too much thought into it which I disobeyed immediately. When I say disobeyed I’m not being […]

The Green Inferno And Movies And Friends Meant A Great Weekend

Posted on

So I had a weekend that turned into the possibility of fun to one of the best all year. I spent Saturday with friends watching a bunch of movies. I haven’t been seeing as many (new) movies as I’d like so I tend to catch up on these hang out days. We saw Mission Impossible Rogue Nation which I thought was great. Considering it’s the fifth in the series it’s still fresh and exciting. I think the decision to use different directors and letting them bring their own uniqueness for each one has made a big difference. Up next was the highly underrated Sinister 2. I’m not sure what people are expecting from the film but I thought it was good for a sequel. Then Hitman Agent 47 which was a fun action film. As you can tell I rarely dislike a film. I pretty much like everything. Finally, at […]

Birthday And Update

Posted on

I know I haven’t been updating too much lately but because there have been a lot of things going on I haven’t had much time. I will be doing more blog posts and also more videos on everything. I will list a couple key things for now. First, I just had another birthday. So there was that. As I mentioned before I did get a new camera, the Sony FS7 4K camera. As always is the case with a new camera there is a learning curve but since I’m coming from a Sony camera to another it isn’t that big. However, the recording format is new for me so there is some learning there. Mainly how to shoot in it correctly and how to work with it in post production. I’ll be getting into that more soon. I have to say it is definitely the best camera I have ever […]

The Third Man 4K Restoration

Posted on

So recently I got the chance to see one of my all time favorite films, Carol Reed’s The Third Man , in the theatre in the new 4K restoration. I’ve been lucky enough to see it before on the big screen but this was special as it has been restored in a new digital presentation. While there have been some really great versions of the film over the years, including the 50th anniversary and the now out of print Criterion Blu-ray, but to see it restored in full 4K is quite an experience. The Music Box Theatre in Chicago is doing a special Orson Welles retrospective throughout the summer showing several of his films. I’ve been able to see a couple of his films for the first time on the big screen this summer including Citizen Kane and Touch Of Evil both in 35mm. The special 4K digital restoration screening […]

Happy 40th Anniversary Jaws

Posted on

Hard to believe it but we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s JAWS. A film that not only terrified and thrilled me but fascinated and inspired me as well. I saw it for the first time when I was a kid on VHS. Even as a kid there was something about the film that drew you into it. I don’t mean just the naked girl who gets killed in the very beginning either.¬† The build into the story and the sense of how much this shark tears apart this community and the leading up to the, in some ways, modern Moby Dick sea hunt. JAWS shows the master work of a young director who showed that he was a talent to go in line with the greats before him. A lot has been written about the way the film works because how rarely we see the shark since […]

Update And Movie Trailers

I know I haven’t posted in almost a month but things have been a little hectic. However, there will be an update video coming soon. I haven’t posted a Vague Ramblings video in awhile but it’s coming soon. I am coming up with ways to do them regularly. Ideally at least one a week if not more. Something I am super excited about are the movies coming out next year. I am behind in the movies this year (some I plan on seeing if they’re still playing within the next couple weeks) but next year there are a few I will see opening day. The main one for me, as is obvious if you know me or have been reading this blog, is for Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens. My Star Wars fandom knows no bounds and the fact that we’re seeing something that, to be honest, I […]
