Day Fifteen – What is your favorite monster movie?
KING KONG (1933) d: Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack
Everyone knows the story, the expedition, the girl, the giant ape. A true cinematic marvel and one that is just as exciting today as it was when it was released. It holds special meaning for me because it always makes me think of Thanksgiving. Why does a giant ape remind me of Thanksgiving? No, it has nothing to do with watching relatives devouring their meal. Well, not entirely. When I was a kid they used to show ‘King Kong’ every Thanksgiving on TV. And it usually ended right before it was time to eat so I always knew that when Kong climbed to the top of the Empire State Building that the ending was near for the mighty Kong but also that the mighty meal was also upon us. I used to marvel at the wonders of the film. I knew as a kid that it was just stop motion but it never ceased to take away from the imagination set forth in the film making it even more full of wonder.
When I can I try and watch it every Thanksgiving as an adult. Hopefully one day with my own kids. The Eighth Wonder Of The World is also one of the most magnificent films ever made and is deserving of my pick for my favorite monster movie.
