I went to the first Walker Stalker Convention which is mainly a convention dedicated to the TV series The Walking Dead. I’m a fan of the show but my real desire to go to the convention, at least for one day (I ended up going on Sunday), was to meet two guests specifically.
One of the greatest make up effects artists in the industry is Greg Nicotero of KNB Effects who not only supervises the effects of The Walking Dead, and is one of the executive producers, plus has directed several episodes, but has done the effects for so many films over the last 29 years. I have wanted to meet him for the longest time. He started out as a protege of the great Tom Savini. One of his first films assisting Tom was George Romero’s Day Of The Dead. I couldn’t pass the chance to meet him and have him sign my poster.
Also there was another alumni of Day Of The Dead, actor Howard Sherman who played Bub, one of the most iconic (and arguably the best) zombie ever committed to celluloid.
Both of them could not have been nicer. I also lucked out with Greg since he had to catch a plane after his Q&A panel but luckily signed until he literally had to run. Most people just leave but he stayed as long as he possibly could. Both of them were just as cool as I had always hoped they were.
Also there were the guys from the TV show Comic Book Men which is the Kevin Smith produced show about what goes on at the New Jersey store Jay And Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. Bryan Johnson was also in a number of Kevin Smith films so I had him sign my Clerks and Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back posters.
It was a fun time. Hopefully they throw the convention again next year.
