30 Day Horror Movie Challenge Part 2 – Day 5 – What is your favorite vampire film? FRIGHT NIGHT (1985) d: Tom Holland No doubt one of the most popular sub genre’s of horror is the vampire film. Stretching back to one of the most famous silent films F. W. Murnau’s ‘Nosferatu‘ in 1922 up until present day, which includes even the remake of this film, there have been countless vampire films of all different kinds. My personal favorite though has always been Tom Holland’s ‘Fright Night’. I first saw it on video when I was a kid and fell in love with it immediately. Sort of an Alfred Hitchcock version of a vampire film with a ‘Rear Window‘ homage with Charlie (William Ragsdale) looking out his window to his new neighbor, Jerry Dandridge (Chris Sarandon), where he sees a girl about to be fanged by him. No one believes […]

30 Day Horror Movie Challenge Part 2 – Day 4 – What is your favorite Sci-Fi Horror film? INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978) d: Philip Kaufman I know there are a lot of choices for this one. And a few I decided not to go with as they are picks for other things (I’m trying not to repeat titles in this). One science fiction horror film I do love a lot is ‘Invasion Of The Body Snatchers’. I do love the original but the 1978 version has always stuck out to me. I find it quite chilling and very effective. Aliens coming to Earth to turn into us by consuming our bodies while we sleep. Out comes a copy only devoid of emotion. Featuring a great cast with Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, and Jeff Goldblum and an atmosphere filled with creepiness and paranoia. Where the common seems strange. I […]

30 Day Horror Movie Challenge Part 2 – Day 3 – What is your favorite werewolf movie? AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (1981) d: John Landis Easily my favorite werewolf film is ‘An American Werewolf In London’. It is scary and horrifying and funny and entertaining and features what is arguably the best werewolf transformation ever committed to celluloid by the amazing Rick Baker. I some how convinced my dad to show this film to me as a small kid and it scared me so badly that if I was outside at night I would look over into the woods and wonder if a werewolf was there. Living in Connecticut at the time there were enough wooded areas around to feed my fearful wonderment. I actually never got to see the whole film until a few years later on TV late at night. Not sure watching it late at night […]

30 Day Horror Movie Challenge Part 2 – Day 2 – What is your favorite slasher film? HALLOWEEN (1978) d: John Carpenter This was a bit of a hard choice because there are so many possibilities. However this goes back to personal favorites and John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’ is a personal favorite that is a part of my life. When I first saw ‘Halloween’ I was just as impressed with it as I was freaked out by it. There is a simple artistry to it and I don’t mean that disparagingly. It has an atmosphere about it and a mood to it that lends itself to the fear. A lot of the cliches we associate with the slasher film can go back to ‘Halloween’ so it might not be as easy to appreciate how groundbreaking it was. And every year I watch it either on or near Halloween. It is still […]

30 Day Horror Movie Challenge Part 2 – Day 1 – What horror film started your love of the horror genre? CREEPSHOW (1982) d: George A. Romero I have written about ‘Creepshow’ so many times that most of you reading this are aware of my love of this film. However I don’t think I ever wrote about it in this context before. I was already into horror films before I saw ‘Creepshow’. However what ‘Creepshow’ did was solidify my love of the genre. It cemented it to the point where I was definitely a horror fan. I guess you could say I went from being interested in the genre to just full blown loving it. I wanted to see all of them. Much of my film study early on was coming from horror films and magazines such as Fangoria. The beauty of horror films is they are generally made with […]
